Chapter 14

‘Couldn’t stem the bleeding.’ The medic tensed his shoulders in a shrug. ‘Lost too much blood.’

Robison scowled at him, not bothering to hide his annoyance. He had been watching the medic’s frantic efforts to save Elaine’s life. It looked rather like someone trying to plug a leaking roof with toilet paper. Instead of applying pressure to stem the flow of blood he had just thrown bandages on the spurting wound. Even his face was smeared with her blood where he had continually wiped away his own sweat. ‘Clean up the mess,’ he growled. ‘Every last drop.’

The man swallowed, a momentary pulse of fear contorting his face. ‘Of course... And the body?’

Robison crouched down and studied Elaine’s body for a moment. Moments earlier her face was a series of contorted lines as she struggled against the pain. Now the lines had gone. She looked like a window mannequin, staring glassy eyed at nothing.

‘Bury her alongside Pierre. They are both traitors. They deserve each other,’ he ordered.

The great shame of all this is that it would make the interrogation much harder, he thought miserably. He had planned to question them separately then compare their answers. Now he would have to bluff.

Alex was being held in the servants’ quarters at the rear of the house. Robison led Thomas down a narrow, winding flight of stairs to a wooden-beamed room with a low ceiling. The room was once the servants’ dining area and had an open gallery at the far end. Now it was strewn with broken cutlery and pots, littered with rat droppings. It smelt of shit, damp and mould. In the centre, tied to a chair with his head bowed, was Alex. A soldier stood either side of him and immediately gave the Alpha salute when he approached.

Alex looked up anxiously when he saw Robison. ‘How’s Elaine?’

‘Fine for now.’ Robison threw him a smile. ‘How well she remains will depend entirely on your answers to my questions.’

Alex frowned. ‘We were trying to help. Instead, you shot Pierre.’

‘Elaine shot Pierre,’ Robison replied mildly. ‘That’s why Thomas stabbed her.’

Alex’s face flushed red with anger and he strained against his ties. ‘That’s a lie!’

Robison paused to study Alex for a moment. Not much affected him these days, but when he locked eyes with Alex, he felt a shudder of pure hatred sweep through him. ‘I need you to tell me everything about Genesis. Its exact location, its defences, where the tunnel entrances and vents are...everything.’

‘You want to destroy us?’

‘I want to capture Genesis with the minimal loss of life – ours and yours. If you tell me how to enter the city undetected then casualties will be kept to a minimum.’

‘What will you do once you have Genesis?’

‘They will become like us. Alphas.’

‘Your disease will kill thousands of my people.’

‘Only the weak. The strong will survive and welcome us.’

Alex bowed his head and remained motionless.

‘I know a lot more about you than you think,’ Robison went on, when it became clear Alex wasn’t talking. ‘Thomas has explained your history.
